What is the HSK level 3 test?

HSK 3 is designed for learners who have studied Chinese to a level that they can communicate to serve the needs of their personal, studying and working lives. It tests knowledge of 600 words, covering topics such as emotional expression, parts of the body, abstract locations, and seasons.

A number of new grammar particles and structures are also introduced, used to express frequency of occurrence, sequence events, describe things with multiple adjectives and state options.

The biggest difference between HSK 3 and the earlier levels is that HSK 3 does not include pinyin. This means that you must be able to read Hanzi (Chinese characters) in order to pass the level. In addition to the listening and reading sections, HSK 3 also includes a writing section. The audio recordings in the listening section are played twice, as in HSK 1 and 2.

Who is the HSK level 3 test for?

For HSK 3 it is expected that you are able to read Chinese characters and make the three-way association between characters, pronunciation and meaning. It also requires knowledge of the first 600 words introduced in HSK and a grasp of the function of level 3 grammar structures and particles. Passing HSK 3 indicates that you are able to use Chinese to meet most situations you would encounter while travelling in the country and can communicate comfortably in day-to-day usage.
