What is the HSK level 2 test?

The HSK 2 test is for learners who have an excellent grasp of communicating in simple and direct terms in Chinese about some everyday activities. It tests knowledge of 300 words and includes topics such as sports, transportation, asking and giving for directions, and describing objects.

HSK 2 also introduces a number of new grammar structures and particles for describing the particular manner of an action, ‘softening’ speech, expressing “because” and “so”, and making comparisons between objects.

The exam is identical to HSK 1 in that it is made up of a listening and reading component, includes pinyin throughout, and involves no writing whatsoever. The audio recordings for the listening section are also played twice, as in HSK level 1 and 3. However, the number of questions is greater than in level 1 (35 for listening and 25 for reading, versus 20 for listening and 20 for reading).

Who is the HSK level 2 test for?

Passing HSK 2 requires an ability to understand elementary Chinese vocabulary in basic grammatical structures, recognize pinyin, and comprehend verbal dialogues. It requires knowledge of the first 300 words and an understanding of the function of the grammatical particles introduced in the level. Gaining HSK 2 indicates that you have an excellent understanding of the basics of Chinese and are able to talk about a number of day-to-day topics in a simple and direct fashion.
